Execution Matches
Execution Matches are public executions staged as mass entertainment in Rockvil’s decline. They represent the endpoint of the game’s arc of violence: what begins as capital punishment for violent crime becomes, by 2071, televised spectacle with enthusiastic crowds, competitive executioners, and skycopters announcing match times like sports broadcasts. A person can be executed for cheating on their food allowance.
The Escalation
The death penalty’s expansion across the five decades is one of the most clearly tracked metrics of societal collapse (all from the SCORE table, prism.zil lines 267-405):
| Year | Death Penalty Scope | Score Item | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2051 | Attempted rape | #14 | 2 |
| 2061 | Most crimes; public executions begin | #76, #78 | 3 + 4 |
| 2071 | All crimes; televised matches; executioner awards; food violations | #77, #60, #79, 17-18 | 4 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 10 |
The acceleration is deliberate. In 2051, the death penalty applies to one violent crime. By 2061, it covers “most crimes” and has gone public. By 2071, it covers “all crimes” — including food allowance violations — and has become a televised entertainment industry with competitive executioners and “enthusiastic crowds” (score item 79, 8 points).
The Spectacle
By 2071, Execution Matches are promoted through the sky. A skycopter flies over Rockvil “announcing Execution Matches” (score item 103, 3 points) — the same skycopters that in 2051 announced prayer meetings (score item 64, 1 point). The machinery of state has transformed religious outreach into death-sport advertising.
The matches are televised. Score item 60 awards 7 points for observing “televised executioner awards” in 2071 — executioners compete for recognition, their craft reduced to a ratings contest. The audience response is documented: “enthusiastic crowds at Execution Matches” (score item 79). These are not forced attendees. They are enthusiastic.
What Gets You Killed
By 2071, the offenses warranting execution include:
- Food allowance cheating (score item 17, 8 points) — a person can be executed for taking too much food
- Food ration violation (score item 18, 10 points) — the highest-value death penalty score item
- Curfew violation (score item 117, 8 points) — drunken cops shoot violators in the street; no trial, no match, just summary execution
- Morality Violations (score item 16, 5 points by 2061) — a life sentence for ill-defined moral crimes, precursor to execution
- Heresy — Jill Simm is dragged away as a heretic by her own son Mitchell in 2071 (score item 120, 9 points); the Execution Match is implied
The food-related executions are particularly damning. The highest-value execution score items (10 and 8 points) are not for violence — they are for eating. A starving population is executed for trying to eat more than their ration. The system kills people for being hungry, then broadcasts it as entertainment.
The Architecture of Death
The Execution Matches likely take place at Rockvil Stadium (ROCKVIL-STADIUM in rockvil.zil). The stadium lot system (STADIUM-LOT-A through C) suggests large crowds. The jail, courthouse, and reformatory form the judicial infrastructure feeding the matches.
The executioners themselves become celebrities. “Televised executioner awards” (score item 60) implies a profession with status, recognition, and career advancement. In a collapsed economy where the skycar factory operates at “a fraction of capacity” and most citizens are serfs, executioner is a growth industry.
Connection to the Church
The Execution Matches cannot be separated from the Church of God’s Word. By 2071, the Church owns the only bank in Rockvil (score item 83), controls the cinema’s propaganda output (score item 95), and has absorbed the state’s moral authority. The BSF carries out the arrests; the Church provides the ideological justification. Mitchell Simm, a Church member turned BSF officer, leads the raid that arrests his mother for heresy — the personal made political, the family dinner table turned execution staging ground.
Thematic Weight
The Execution Matches are the game’s most brutal indictment of the trajectory it depicts. The progression is not: dictatorship → executions. It is: democracy → capital punishment for violent crime → capital punishment for most crimes → public executions → televised execution entertainment → executions for food theft. Each step is incremental. No single coup d’état occurs. The crowd at the stadium in 2071 could be the same people who shopped at Dunbar’s in 2041.
The game’s scoring system rewards the player for recording these observations. You earn points for witnessing the matches, the skycopter announcements, the executioner awards. The player cannot stop the executions. You can only bear witness. That is the game’s thesis: in the face of atrocity made spectacle, the moral act is to see it, record it, and refuse to look away.
